Oxford University Press hosts a Teacher Training Workshop in Rajkot to Develop Critical Thinking Skills in the English Classrooms

Rajkot, Gujarat – November , 2024: Oxford University Press (OUP), a department of the University of Oxford, organized a day-long workshop in Rajkot, aimed at enhancing the capacity of English language teachers. The workshop, ‘Developing Critical Thinking Skills in the

English Classrooms: Encouraging Learners to Analyze, Evaluate, and Create’ was led by Ms. Mala Palani, an author, expert and educationist in the English Language Teaching.

The workshop underscored the significance of English Language Teaching within the framework of the National Curriculum Framework (NCF-SE 2023). Ms. Palani emphasized the NCF’s holistic approach to education, which addresses not only students’ cognitive development but also their physical, emotional, social, cultural, spiritual, and affective growth. This comprehensive approach aims to prepare students for real-world challenges.

Ms. Palani also stressed the crucial role of teacher training in advancing education. She detailed how the NCF relates to language teaching, breaking down competencies for various stages and proposing innovative methods to integrate key NCF concepts. This includes leveraging students’ cultural and linguistic resources and fostering 21st-century skills.  She recommended several tips for enhancing language teaching in classrooms.

Ms. Mala Palani said, “Our workshop, ‘Developing Critical Thinking Skills in the English Classrooms’ focused on empowering educators with the practical ‘how’ of implementing competency-based methods outlined by NCFSE 2023. The workshop emphasized holistic assessments, project-based learning, and culturally responsive pedagogy, enabling educators to create inclusive, dynamic classrooms that nurture creativity, collaboration, and language proficiency for future success. This approach fosters inclusive, culturally responsive classrooms, preparing students for the challenges of a dynamic world and positioning educators as leaders in modern, impactful education.”

Developing critical thinking skills in English classrooms is essential for fostering analytical, evaluative, and creative abilities in learners. By engaging students in activities that require them to analyze texts, evaluate arguments, and create original content, educators can cultivate a deeper understanding of language and its uses. Encouraging discussions, debates, and problem-solving tasks helps students to think independently and articulate their thoughts clearly. This approach not only enhances their language skills but also prepares them for real-world challenges by promoting a mindset of inquiry and innovation.

Ms. Palani added, “English has profoundly transformed education across states. It serves as a medium for acquiring knowledge and as a gateway to professional opportunities, enabling students to connect with and learn from diverse people, cultures, and ideas worldwide. As a global leader in English language teaching, OUP aims to equip teachers with new-age tools and techniques. This professional development workshop for language teachers in Rajkot will help in enhancing their skills and continue making a positive impact.”

Oxford University Press remains committed to fostering educational excellence and organizes similar workshops and training programs to empower educators and enhance the quality of education.  On this occasion, it showcased new editions of its popular textbook series, such as New Pathways and Adventures with Grammar and Composition.  Some of OUP’s popular series in English are: New Oxford Modern English , Mulberry, Echoes (a course in learning and speaking), Oxford Learners Grammar & Composition, Friday Afternoon Comprehension and Composition, and blended (print + digital) products such as Oxford Advantage.

Participants praised the workshop for its practical approach and the valuable insights gained.

Under this Mega Health Check-Up Drive, Health Camps were organized in Four villages located in the state of Gujarat. This initiative served around 400 people living in and around the villages of Nenpur, Choila, Umalla & Sukhsar and facilitated people with medical supervision from Certified Doctors. It also encouraged the beneficiaries to take care of their health and implement necessary lifestyle changes in accordance to prevailing pandemic conditions to live healthier lives. The day-long Health Check-Up camps were organized in the premises of nearby Temples and Panchayat Bhawan in respective areas under the guidance of doctors. People availed free health facilities entailing consultation from MBBS doctors for issues ranging from women health and child health to diet & nutrition, availing generic medicines, vitals check like hypertension test, blood pressure test etc. as well as counselling, during the health camp. Sharing humble thoughts on initiative, Shikha Sharma, Director & CEO, SATYA Shakti Foundation stated, “The health camp is one of the best ways of assisting people who require health attention, and we feel privileged to be able to conduct these free health camps. Considering the large turnout of people, we hope to organize many more such health camps in the future to enhance the overall health of the citizens. Also, I am thankful to Mr. Vivek Tiwari, MD, CIO & CEO, SATYA MicroCapital for supporting us in this initiative. I feel awestruck when I realize that SATYA is making extra efforts in serving humanity by providing healthcare checkup services apart from facilitating micro loans to those living on the bottom of the pyramid. I am also grateful to all the Doctors and Medical Fraternity for making this happen”. A visibly very happy participant remarked, “Such free health camps should be organized frequently, so that rural people can avail the benefits of preventive healthcare. I appreciate the choice of organizers for selecting the place of worship as the site for this health camp. Attending a health camp at a place of worship has bestowed enormous faith among us for assessing best medical facilities at our doorstep free of cost. These camps have certainly motivated people to stay proactive about their health and make preventive health check-ups a part of their lifestyle”
